What attracted me and 250 others to Ballincollig parkrun?

As part of Ballincollig’s parkrun, we asked club member Mairead Aherne to write a few lines.

A year ago doing the parkrun would have been something I thought I could never do – me running 5km?.....but now it’s turned into a passion and something I know I can’t do without. No matter what the weather or how tired I’m feeling before the run on an early damp wintry Saturday morning – it can’t come close to comparing to the afterglow effect your body feels for the entire day. it sets you up right, clears your head and gives you the energy to enjoy your weekend. Running is such a convenient way to keep fit. You can do it anywhere as long as you have your gear, and you can go out and run for as long or as short as you like. But what’s extra special about parkrun is that you get to do it with friends and they take place around Ireland in many different locations, so even if you’re going off for a weekend break somewhere you may still be able to get in your parkrun fix. For example I often take part in the Malahide Parkrun when I visit my sister in Dublin.

I think it’s the simplicity of it and it’s free. Plus, it’s a great way of keeping fit. I have gotten to know so many people from this event. Just turn up 09.30 am at Ballincollig Regional Park, a convenient location with ample parking. Wonderful Volunteers and great signage help guide you along the the 5 km route every week. Just bring your own bar code race number and away you go!

The course is two loops with a small incline to negotiate. Everyone runs well & tries to get a Personal Best. The pre-race announcements are clear and sufficient. When you get used to the course, times will improve. Like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, the parkrun has something for every runner, whether a fast walk, jog, time trial, or PB (personal best)

It’s a Fun Free Enjoyable event.
